Hideouts are a stealthy aspect to Fortnite gameplay that allow players to hide themselves completely from view if needed.

Epic Games added the feature in last 2019 at the start of Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 1. No longer did players need to crouch in the bushes and hope not to be spotted. For the first time, Epic decided to provide spots on the map with the express, deliberate purpose of helping players escape or plan an ambush. Since then, these tools have been removed and brought back countless times over the game’s history.

They’re called Hideouts.

What Are Hideouts in Fortnite

Hideouts exist all over the map and can take the form of any unsuspecting prop in the surrounding area. The two most popular are haystacks—primarily found on Frenzy Farm—and dumpsters, but have also been known to take the form of phone booths and other common crevices.

Like their name suggests, Hideouts are meant to hide players from view. Anyone planning on using a Hideout only needs to find it, approach it, and press the correct button corresponding with the pop-up “Hide” prompt. Be warned, however, that Hideouts aren’t as secret a mechanic as they used to be. Any existing location could already be in use—harboring an enemy just waiting to pounce.

Players can rotate their view normally while in a Hideout. However, they cannot attack until they leave it using the same button as before. Once prompted, the player character will burst out of their spot and be able to return to the fray.

Hideouts have served several purposes over time from a place to plot ambushes, escape death, or even safely go AFK to feed the cats.
