Bowing to what they call “phenomenal” demand, officials of the Tri-Rail commuter train system on Monday announced the start of Saturday service on Dec. 8 between West Palm Beach and Miami.
Saturday service will operate from 6 a.m. to midnight, with trains running about every two hours.
Shuttle service will be provided from Tri-Rail stations to each of South Florida’s three major airports. Other connections on county bus systems are available at most stations, and Metrorail/Metromover connections are available in Miami. All connections are free with a Tri-Rail ticket.
The Dec. 8 start-up will feature a special promotional campaign, “Tri-It on Saturday,” including free or discounted admission to various attractions accessible from Tri-Rail.
Tri-Rail staff will be at each station to answer questions about the new service. Special bus service will be available in West Palm Beach for two events, the Holiday Festival and, for a small charge, the Enchanted Kingdom.
Similar bus service will be available for future events such as the Coconut Grove Arts Festival and the Miami Grand Prix.
Regular adult fares are $2 one way. Senior citizens, handicapped, full- time students and children ages 5 to 12 ride for $1; children under 5 ride free when accompanied by an adult.
Discount fares for groups of 25 or more are available by calling Norma Dalby at 1-800-TRI-RAIL at least 24 hours in advance.
