Duane Thomas and Chad Upson won season-ending United States Tennis Association/National Junior Tennis League Palm Beach County Chapter tournaments last week at Gaines Park in West Palm Beach.
Thomas, 13, and Upson, 9, were feted as city champions for their age groups.
Thomas, representing Gaines Park, won the 11-13 age division.
Upson represented Phipps Park and won the 8-10 division.
Thomas will lead a 12-player Palm Beach County All-Star team in the Domino’s Pizza Team Tennis state tournament for NJTL players, beginning today and ending Friday. The team left for Lakeland on Monday.
Thomas is joined by Betsy Merrell, Nicky Parks, Michael Sallee, Kacy Young, Tara Merrell, Christine Marino, Art Marino, Sean Upson, Sidney Campbell, Amy Higgins and Kim George.
In another season-ending ceremony last week at Gaines Park, one child from each site was awarded a scholarship of $250, donated by the West Palm Beach Optimist Club.
The scholarship winners were: Clayton Vanderlaan of Gaines Park, Jerry Costanzo of Vedado Park, Jesus Vargas of Phipps Park, Richard Shaw of Howard Park and Michael Von Hof of South Olive Park.
The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department also honored its 15 record-book leaders for accumulating the most points throughout the summer.
The record-book leaders were: Aaron Schoff, Jason Matthews and Irene Walsh of South Olive Park; Allison Higgins, Ian Mock and Scott Gaddy of Howard Park; George Gutierrez, Elizabeth Sheehan and Katie Sarago of Phipps Park; Preston Searles, Mickey Fimm and Ginger Hamilton of Vedado Park; and Shenika Mainer, George Mainer and Vanverlaan of Gaines Park.
Juan Hernandez of Phipps Park, who was attending the USTA Invitational Tennis Camp in Indianapolis from Aug. 1-9, was also recognized.
And an award was given to Sharon Merrell as Volunteer Parent of the Year. She is the mother of Betsy and Tara.
— Grand Slam USA will sponsor a Class C and Class D tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Greenacres City Park.
There will be a $100 entry fee.
Trophies will be awarded for first through third places and the entry fee includes free practice hitting for all entrants at Grand Slam.

— A team of seven full-contact karate champions from Florida will face a team from Georgia on Monday night at Shooters in Boynton Beach.
The World Karate Association Florida amateur champions include Armando Gonzales of West Palm Beach, the state super-bantamweight champ with a 17-0 record.
Gonzales, 17, will face his counterpart from Georgia, David McKenzie, who has a 3-1 record. Gonzales and McKenzie will be team captains.
But the main event of the evening will follow the team competition when Ken Weldgen Jr. of Greenacres City faces Chris Anderson of West Palm Beach.
Weldgen (41-0) is the world lightweight champion. Anderson is the United States lightweight champion. Both fighters are 19 years old. The bout is scheduled for five rounds.
Anderson is expected to be Weldgen’s toughest opponent yet. Anderson was the state lightweight Golden Gloves champion in 1983. He won his U.S. kickboxing title in 1984 against Randy Sanchez of New Mexico at the Royce Hotel in West Palm Beach.
Tickets are $15 general admission and $25 ringside. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. The first fight begins at 8.

— The YMCA of the Palm Beaches will offer a racquetball league to begin on Monday.

— Teddi Narcowich of the Boca Raton Masters won the high point trophy in the women’s 25-29 division at the Southern Regional Masters Long Course Championships July 31 to Aug. 2 at St. Petersburg.
Narcowich placed second in the 400 and 200 freestyle, 400 and 200 individual medley and the 200 butterfly. Narcowich placed third five times.
Happy Deas placed second overall in the women’s 25-29 division despite victories in the 200, 100 and 50 butterfly and the 400 individual medley.
Bill Austin won the 200, 100 and 50 breaststroke and the 50 butterfly. Austin placed third overall in the men’s 60-64 division.
Tony Gazzia, who had four third-place finishes in the men’s 30-34 division, and John Stevenson also competed for Boca Raton.

Aces Ivan Shegota and Brian Hathaway downed Mike Giffin and Mike Vargo 8-2, Hill and Bartolomeo beat Neeley and Wilcox 7-3 and Andrew Preston and Lisa Melgren tied Aces Jason Flynn and Charlie Gleek 5-5 in doubles.
The Champs’ singles victories were by Giffin (5-3 over Shegota and 5-0 over Hathaway), Neeley (4-1 over Flynn), Vargo (7-3 over Gleek) and Melgren (4-1 over Flynn).
