A roller coaster touted as the “tallest, fastest, longest giga coaster in North America” was temporarily shut down after a crack was discovered in the coaster’s steel support pillar.

For those unaware, the Fury 325, or commonly known as the giga coaster, is the current main attraction at the Carowinds amusement park. It stands at a jaw-dropping 325 feet, with an 81-degree drop and speeds of up to 95 miles an hour. For comparison, it is currently listed on Trip Savvy as one of the fastest coasters in the world.

To put it simply, it was an absolute nightmare when a visitor, Jeremy Wagner, first spotted the crack on one of the coaster’s pillars. Apparently, Wagner’s daughter and niece had ridden the Fury 325 eight times before he noticed the horrifying crack when he was about to head back to his car at the parking lot.

Wagner recorded the situation and rushed to report the issue to the park’s officials. The video clearly shows the pillar briefly separating around the crack as a coaster car passes by on the track.

“It could have come unhinged and just went like a steamroller through the parking lot plowing over pedestrians and cars and anything in its path,” Wagner told The Washington Post.

He later voiced his anger in a Facebook post and called for the giga coaster to shut down immediately.

“I hope they shut this ride down after I reported this video at guest services. It moves 2-4 feet. It was still running when we left,” he stated.

Wagner said the officials he spoke with allegedly “lacked urgency” as they did not immediately respond to his concern. It was only after Wagner notified the firefighter in the amusement park’s jurisdiction that they finally halted the roller coaster.

In a statement to The Washington Post, Carowinds amusement park spokesperson Courtney Weber said safety was their top priority, and that they appreciated the patience and understanding of their valued guests during this process.

The Fury 325 will undergo daily inspections in the future to ensure proper functioning and structural integrity after the incident was brought to their attention.
