Olympic Heights junior Isaque Costa recorded the highest Olympic total in all weight divisions among competitors from Palm Beach and Broward at the FHSAA boys weightlifting state championship.

And Costa, who earned a fourth-place medal in the Olympic category in the 183-pound weight class, has been recognized as the Sun Sentinel boys weightlifter of the year.

Costa registered 290 in the clean-and-jerk and 230 in the snatch for a 520 total in the Olympic event at the Class 3A state final. He also placed 10th in the traditional category after he finished with a 570 total. Costa captured the district championship in both the Olympic and traditional events.

He finished as the regional runner-up in both categories to qualify for the state competition. He enjoyed an impressive performance at the state final as he increased his total from regionals by 15 pounds in the Olympic competition.

“I was calm heading into the state championship and I wanted to enjoy the moment,” he said. “I had the mindset that anything is possible and I knew I could lift higher. I was able to stay focused.  I had a lot of fun with my team and made great memories.”

Costa had a personal-record 300 in the clean-and-jerk during his junior season. He also recorded a 280 in the bench press and 230 in the snatch.

Costa previously participated in Jiu-jitsu and earned a yellow belt. He joined the school’s weightlifting team during his sophomore campaign. He participated in the regional tournament and was able to watch several of his teammates perform at a higher level. Costa was motivated to reach the state competition and earn a medal this season.

“Isaque had a very special season,” Olympic Heights coach Micah Stucky said. “He was one of the underclassmen who bought into the offseason.”

Costa showed his dedication and commitment while training at Victory Mode Weightlifting. He will participate at USA Weightlifting Junior Nationals this year.

“I had the mindset and approach to get better and stay committed after school,” he said. “We had a good vibe and energy in the room and it’s been a really cool environment. I want to be consistent and continue to train hard to place higher next year. I really enjoy weightlifting.”
