Charles Ferdon credits the redone tables at Slate Billiards for his recent improvement in his pool stroke.

“The thing that stands out is the tables, they are completely redone,” he said. “In fact, the entire place is redone.”

Ferdon lives in Broward but works in Palm Springs and said once a week on his way home from work, he stops by Slate Billiards, 140 N. Congress Ave., suite 7, to play some pool or just hang with friends.

“It’s just something that I dabbled in since I was a teenager,” he said. “I’m not on tour or anything, or in any leagues.”

Michael Bradford took over Slate in March when it was failing after 23 years as a staple in Boynton Beach, formerly George’s Billiards.

May 7 was the grand opening after two months of remodeling, Bradford said.

“I think it is one of the oldest businesses in Boynton,” he said. “It was run down and people were losing interest. I’ve been a pool player for 12 years and have a major interest.”

The 3,700-square-foot facility has 11 tables, a jukebox, arcade games like Golden Tee Golf and darts.

It is open from noon to 1 a.m. all week and until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Bradford started playing pool after high school and played all over the country in professional tournaments. He even operated leagues.

“I couldn’t get enough,” he said. “Every free minute, I would play pool. As I got older, I had got away from playing as much as I like.”

Bradford said it makes more sense for people to be working at things they love doing, hence his new billiards hall.

Some specials include a $7 play all day from noon to 7 p.m. all week, and in the evening, $6 an hour for one person, $9 for two people and $12 for three.

“Sunday is half price draft beer, wine and food while playing pool,” he said. “Wednesday night, we have a pool league, which is a great way to meet new people.”
