My Students
The students in my class are fun, curious, creative, and energetic! They love to learn with interactive activities. When my students learned about landforms last month, they each got to create their own 3-D salt-dough landform map. They clearly loved it, and everyone was very proud of their own creation! One of my students even told me she was going to add animals to her map when she got home. I love when my students get to do fun activities to learn.
I’ve noticed that some of my students struggle to work effectively with their classmates, and I think this may be due to a lack of experiences with partners during the pandemic.
I want to give my students more opportunities to practice working together in my classroom since it’s so important.
At our school, 92.9% of the students receive free and reduced lunch, and 16% receive special education services. As a result, my classroom is filled with a wide variety of learners who are all counting on me to provide them with an excellent education. This can be difficult to do when the needed resources are expensive, but I still do my best to meet each of their needs.
My Project
Our fourth-grade students will be learning how energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents. They are also expected to create an electric circuit that converts electrical energy into light, sound, or motion energy. To be able to master these standards, our students need access to several resources that we don’t currently have. This is why I am requesting your assistance to buy Snap Circuit sets for our fourth graders.
Snap Circuit sets are engaging and educational kits that are perfect for teaching students about electrical circuits and energy.
There are several different types of Snap Circuit sets that focus on converting electrical energy into light, sound, and motion. Each set comes with several pieces that can be snapped together in a variety of ways to create electrical circuits. Each circuit does something different, like makes sounds, causes lights to shine, or causes a propeller to spin. These kits match perfectly with the skills we teach in fourth grade, and they are also engaging and fun.
Snap Circuits are useful for helping students learn how to effectively communicate with others, be engaged learners, follow directions, problem solve, and work together as a group (the pandemic seems to have caused a lack of these skills). If I’m awarded this grant, I plan on having our fourth graders use each Snap Circuit set in small groups. Students will have to work together to follow the directions and create the circuits they choose. If a group is struggling to work effectively together, I’ll coach them on how to improve their small group social skills. My hope is that our students will not only learn about energy and how electrical circuits work, but will also improve their problem-solving communication, and small group skills.
