This is “Small Bites,” a South Florida Sun Sentinel feature with tiny tidbits on the food and beverage scene — because we know that sometimes you just don’t have room for a long article. You want a little news brief instead, an amuse bouche of information, if you will. Enjoy!
WHAT:
Bagel Host Too — aka BHT — has been a breakfast SoFlo go-to since 1985, with a few different owners over the years. Two years ago, a family headed by Luis Gonzalez Estall and Margarita Ciccarelli snapped up the well-known Sunrise eatery, and now they’ve decided to expand their services beyond the a.m. and well into the p.m., turning BHT into a diner.
They hired chef Eric Bonillo as a consultant, though now his role has expanded to partner/operator.
Bonillo explains: “The changes made are to entice more to a demographic that is looking for some wonderful comfort food in the afternoon and also early part of the evening with delicious sandwiches and burgers with items such as ribs and brisket made fresh every Friday and Saturday only … and now introducing a rotisserie chicken option to our repertoire from lunch to close.”
The team started experimenting with dishes and extended hours about three or four months ago, getting feedback from customers before settling on an “Americana-experience-with-a-twist” culinary direction, or comfort food from their perspective. And now the menu has dishes such as pan-seared salmon and 12-ounce steaks from cattle raised on local ranches.
There is also a new Taco Tuesday Fiesta set for 2 to 8 p.m. every week. Next up will be a happy hour menu with finger foods, as well as beer and wine specials.
BHT seats 152 guests indoors and 36 outdoors.
WHEN:
Under the new hours, BHT now serves breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily and dinner on Tuesdays through Saturdays until 8 p.m.
“[We’re] also featuring an early bird from 3 to 5 p.m. with a … rotating special,” Bonillo says.
WHERE:
Head to 4121 NW 88th Ave., Sunrise.
EXTRA TIDBIT:
Originally from Venezuela, Ciccarelli and Estall both worked in the health-care industry (she as a pediatrician and he as a surgeon), but decided to change gears and home addresses in favor of staying closer to loved ones here in South Florida and trying something different
