Rabu Abu adalah masa perayaan prapaskah bagi umat Katolik, ditandai dengan upacara penerimaan abu di gereja yang dioles dengan membentuk tanda salib pada dahi sebagai lambang masa pertobatan.
Disebut Rabu Abu karena pada hari tersebut para jemaat Katolik di gereja akan diberkati dengan abu daun palma (dari tahun sebelumnya) yang kemudian dioleskan pada dahi kaum beriman.
Abu tersebut diperoleh dari pembakaran daun palma yang diberkati pada Minggu Palma tahun sebelumnya.
Sembari mengoleskan abu di dahi para jemaat Katolik, Romo juga akan memberikan nasihat yang berbunyi, "Bertobatlah dan percayalah kepada Injil" atau "Ingatlah, hai manusia, bahwa kita ini abu dan akan kembali menjadi abu."
Banyak orang Katolik menganggap hari Rabu Abu sebagai hari untuk mengingat kefanaan seseorang.
Pada hari ini juga, umat Katolik yang sudah berusia 18 hingga 59 tahun diwajibkan untuk berpuasa, dengan batasan makan kenyang paling banyak satu kali, dan kemudian berpantang.
Masa puasa adalah masa di mana umat Katolik diwajibkan untuk tidak memakan apa pun, sedangkan pantang adalah tidak boleh memakan makanan tertentu.
Misalnya, makanan berlemak, daging, ikan, telur, dan makanan yang mengandung susu.
Masa puasa dan pantang ini berlangsung sejak hari Rabu Abu hingga 40 hari ke depan.
