Successful online discussion groups often simulate real-life communities. There are the 'alpha dogs' (usually the founders), who set the tone, the 'in crowd' (famous people, or those who have proved their credibility by posting regularly) and the peripheral members, who keep the community going. Following eGullet (egullet.org) over the years has been interesting, not only for its insights into food but because of the changing relationships between members. Some of the jockeying for the top dog position has been overtly hostile. One member, Jason Perlow, left eGullet reportedly because of disagreements with co-founder Steven Shaw (who goes by the alias of Fat Guy). Some members left and founded rival discussion groups such as Opinionated About (forums. opinionatedabout.com) and Mouthfuls Food (mouthfulsfood.com). At least one couple met - and are soon to marry - through an online flirtation that began on eGullet.

The site lets members 'read, chew, discuss' food and has areas where members can post recipes and discuss restaurants. If you want to post and use the search forums, you must register; you can also donate money and become an eGullet sponsor.
