McArthur found its new football coach in a former Miami Dolphin.
The Mustangs hired former NFL linebacker Kevin Burnett II as the program’s new leader, athletic director Dennis Dillon told the Sun Sentinel.
“We got better today,” Dillon said. “Coach Burnett wants to teach the game of life. He’s genuine about wanting to help kids. [He] played the game at a very high level and has an incredible plan for success.”
Burnett was born in Inglewood, Calif., and played for the University of Tennessee before playing in the NFL for nine seasons. He spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with the Dolphins. He had 630 total tackles, 20 sacks and five interceptions in his career.
Burnett was previously the defensive coordinator at Piper. He said he was drawn to the McArthur opening because he lives nearby and because of the program’s reputation.
“It’s eight miles from my house, and it’s a powerhouse school and breeding ground for great young men and great football players,” he said.
Burnett, a first-time head coach, said the biggest learning curve will be “learning the ins and outs of the Broward County school system and learning the rules.”
Burnett takes over for former McArthur coach Pierre Senatus, who left the Mustangs to become the defensive line coach for Florida Memorial University.
McArthur went 16-5 in two seasons under Senatus, winning a pair of district titles.
