Sixth overall in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected Lomas, who played for the team for 11 seasons between 1985 and 1995. Before quitting the NFL after 18 seasons, Lomas also played for the Arizona Cardinals from 1996 to 1998, the Cleveland Browns in 1999, the New York Giants from 2000 to 2001, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002, when he won a Super Bowl. Lomas had a very long career and was a pretty regular starter, playing in 263 games and starting 251 of them. From 1990 to 1996, he was selected for the NFC Pro Bowl squad seven times in a row.

He gained notoriety in Detroit, where he made a name for himself as one of the best offensive tackles in the league. He was an important part of the offensive line that guarded perhaps the greatest rushing back in history (Barry Sanders). He played in 164 of the team’s games, making him one of the most tenacious offensive linemen in Detroit Lion’s history.

In the offensive line, Lomas and Kevin Glover played a key role in laying the groundwork for Sanders, who won the NFL rushing championship in 1990 and 1994. From 1989 to 1995, he served as Sanders’ blocking partner for seven seasons, during which time the running back amassed 10,172 yards (averaging 4.9 yards per attempt) and 73 touchdowns.

Since leaving the NFL, he has worked as an analyst for the NFL Network and ESPNEWS. He currently co-hosts a sports radio show on Detroit, Michigan’s WXYT-FM. He replaced Jim Brandstatter as the color analyst for the Detroit Lions radio broadcasts on WJR in 2018.

On December 22, 2012, he acknowledged on the SVP and Russillo show on ESPN Radio that he purposefully chose not to block Green Bay Packers defensive end Sean Jones in a 1994 game to harm and ultimately force out quarterback Scott Mitchell.
