Four Delray Beach teams reached the finals of the recent Sunshine State Games – Summer Lacrosse Kickoff Classic 2023 at Village Park in Wellington.

Florida Select had both teams in the finals of the Girls High School A/B division where the Florida Select 2026 (graduation year) defeated Florida Select 2027, 3-2 for the championship.

Madskillz, the youth teams in the program, won titles in the Girls’ Middle School A and B Divisions. The MadSkillz 2028 defeated Lax Maniax Ballers, 10-4 for the Middle School A Division, while the MadSkillz 2029 defeated Palms LC, 7-6 for the V Division championship.

“The teams in the MadSkillz program had a great weekend at the Sunshine State games and they all competed at a high level,” said John McClain, who has headed up the MadSkillz program since its inception in 2013. He added the Florida Select teams in 2017.

McClain has also coached the American Heritage-Delray girls’ lacrosse team to three state championships, including this past spring.

“All these kids play up against much older players and they thrive on it,” he said.

The MadSkillz teams are the youth teams at the club, while Florida Select are the high school teams.

The tournament featured about 100 boys’ and girls’ teams from throughout the state, including many that are considered some of the best in the country. The tournament wrapped up after playing 210 games on 16 fields on successive days. There were 15 divisions.

The games were played at the Village Park Athletics Complex, which was packed with spectators throughout the weekend.
