The Miami Hurricanes got a commitment from Miami Columbus defensive end Jabari Ishmael on Friday evening.
Ishmael is the son of UM assistant strength and conditioning coach Victor Ishmael, who has been on staff with Miami football for 16 years.
Jabari Ishmael committed more than two years after the Hurricanes were the first team to offer him a scholarship, on May 17, 2018. He also had been courted by the likes of Florida, FSU, Michigan and Notre Dame, among 19 offers.
Ishmael is a lean 6-foot-6 defender on the edge. Rivals gives him a four-star rating and ranks him as the nation’s No. 13 strongside defensive end. He is projected as a weakside defensive end by 247 Sports, which rates him three stars and No. 26 nationally at his position. His 247 Sports composite ranking, which factors multiple ratings, lists him as a four-star recruit.
Ishmael’s commitment gives Miami 18 in the 2021 recruiting class, which before his pledge was ranked 10th in the country by Rivals and 12th by 247 Sports.
Ishmael is the first defensive end in the class after UM brought in three at the position last recruiting cycle, including his former Columbus teammate, Elijah Roberts.
The Hurricanes have a pair of defensive tackles committed in Miami Palmetto’s Savion Collins and Chaminade-Madonna’s Allan Haye. Collins’ teammate at Palmetto, five-star defensive tackle Leonard Taylor, is choosing between Miami and Florida on Aug. 6.
