Julia Black made an extraordinary contribution to music as lead oboist for Harrison School for the Arts orchestra. Julia was deeply committed to both community service and athletic involvement. A beloved teammate on Lakeland High School’s varsity volleyball squad, Julia displayed teamwork and sportsmanship. Since 2021 she also coached younger girls at St Paul Volleyball camp – serving as both mentor and inspiration to future volleyballers in training. Julia left an indelible mark across multiple fields.

In Julia C. Black’s memory, the GiveWell Community Foundation has established the Julia C. Black Memorial Fund at its GiveWell Community Fund. This fund serves as a testament to her passion and indomitable spirit – two traits which were so central to who Julia was as an individual. Julia Black’s sudden and untimely passing has sent shockwaves through Lakeland’s community, including schoolmates, family, and volleyball camps in both Harrison School of Arts and St Paul Volleyball Camp who all shared in her grief through heartfelt tributes that expressed how profound her influence was on all who knew her.
At St. Paul Lutheran Church, funeral services will be held for Julia Black to allow those who knew and loved her an opportunity to come together in her memory. Julia leaves behind her parents Jenny Rebecca Black and Norman Larry Black Jr.; brother Varn Michael Black; and close friend Calum Muldoon who all continue to cherish Julia’s memory and be inspired by her life journey.
