John was born on December 25, 1931, on his grandfather’s homesteaded dairy farm, Ash Grove, situated five miles north of Madison. This dairy farm, a historical cornerstone of Lake County, served as a creamery, general store, switchboard, and post office for the community. John’s early education began at Downs Country School, and he later graduated from General Beadle High School in 1950, where he was a distinguished four-year, three-sport letterman.

His journey continued at South Dakota State University (SDSU), where he played football until a serious knee injury altered the course of his athletic career. John’s leadership shone through as he served as the Student Body President at SDSU and even had the honor of driving the Bummobile in the Hobo Day parade. He graduated from the School of Agriculture with degrees in Dairy Production and Animal Husbandry, a testament to his lifelong passion for farming and agriculture.

It was during his time at SDSU that John met his soulmate, Millie Hammer of Franklin Township. They exchanged vows on June 26, 1955, at the Madison Methodist Church, where John remained a dedicated lifelong member. John Charles Gross will be remembered not only for his academic and athletic achievements but also for his deep commitment to his community and his unwavering faith. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the indelible mark he left on Madison. As we gather to celebrate his life, let us also reflect on the values of service, dedication, and community that he so exemplified throughout his remarkable journey.
