She is famously known for starring in The Last Emperor, Red Rose, White Rose, Twin Peaks, Saving Face, and The Home Song Stories. Joan starred in the 1979 film Little Flower (“小花”). She is also known for directing the feature film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl.

Joan was discovered on the school rifle range by Jiang Qing at the age of 14. In 1975, She was selected for the Actors’ Training Program by the Shanghai Film Studio. While in the training program, she was discovered by Xie Jin.
Jin chose her to star in his 1977 film Youth (Chinese: 青春; pinyin: Qīngchūn) as a deaf-mute whose senses are restored by an Army medical team. In 1979, she was cast in ‘Hearts for the Motherland. Her first Hollywood movie was the adventure drama ‘Tai-Pan’.
She also appeared in the 1985 series ‘MacGyver’, ‘Miami Vice’, and ‘Twin Peaks’.Joan co-starred in ‘Heaven & Earth’. ‘Heaven & Earth’ is a war film. Chen also has double roles in ‘Temptation of a Monk’ as a dangerous temptress and a seductive princess.
Joan served as an associate producer for the flick ‘Wild Side in 1995. She directed ‘Autumn in New York’ in 2000. In 2005, she was featured in the movie “Sunflower.” 1987 Joan starred in the British-Italian epic biographical movie “The Last Emperor.”
