Senior Sandi Fox had 11 service points, 12 digs, seven kills, six aces and three blocks to lead Cardinal Gibbons to a 15-1, 15-13 victory over Westminster Academy in the championship match of the Cardinal Gibbons Invitational on Saturday.

“It was a tough match,” Cardinal Gibbons coach Louise Crocco said. “We let them back in the match in the second game.”

Cardinal Gibbons (27-1) relied on the strength of Fox. With senior Jennifer Furia setting, Fox came through time and again with kills to lead the Redskins to the victory. Furia was steady with 30 assists, two blocks, three digs and four service points. Junior Natalie Hortynski had 10 blocks.

Westminster (24-3) started slow, but took a 13-10 lead in the second game before allowing five points to close out the match. Jenna Homus led the Lions with 13 assists, two kills, two blocks, five service points and two aces. Kelly Cannon served up five points, two of which were aces. Caitlin Sherman added nine kills, three blocks and an ace. Amy Cochran had three kills and four blocks.

“I am proud of the way my team hung in there,” Crocco said. “My girls played hard and strong against a tough opponent. I tip my hat to Westminster Academy. They gave us a tough challenge to overcome.”
