The Broward Sheriff’s Office has issued four citations against a driver whose car slammed into the patio of a popular Pompano Beach doughnut store Thursday morning, sending her and a customer to the hospital.
Janet Ingersoll, of Bells, Texas, told a sheriff’s deputy that her sandal got caught on the accelerator and brake, a crash report said. She lost control of her red two-door Lexus SC430, causing it to barrel into the outdoor dining area of Dandee Donut Factory, 1900 E. Atlantic Blvd., at about 9 a.m.
Ingersoll’s age wasn’t included in the report.
Ingersoll was charged with one count each of failing to use due care; driving with a suspended, revoked or canceled driver’s license with knowledge; driving with an expired tag; and driving with obstruction to the driver’s view or driving mechanism.
The car did not hit anyone, but the crash sent patio furniture through a store window. A male customer seated inside the store was cut by broken glass and taken to Imperial Point Medical Center. He was expected to be all right.
Another customer seated outside the store suffered a small cut from the moving furniture, but he wasn’t taken to a hospital.
Ingersoll initially said she wasn’t hurt, but when she later complained of head pain, paramedics took her to the hospital, the report said. She was expected to be fine, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A deputy found a large thermal coffee container on the driver’s-side floorboard, which he said may have rolled under the brake pedal and contributed to the crash, the report said. The car appeared to be going less than 30 mph because its air bags didn’t deploy, the report said.
A witness said that Ingersoll was eastbound on East Atlantic Boulevard and attempted to turn at Southeast 19th Avenue when the crash occurred, according to the report. Ingersoll gave a different account of the accident, saying she was northbound on Southeast 19th Avenue and turning toward the store when she lost control, the report said.
Ingersoll couldn’t be reached for comment Friday despite phone calls and an e-mail.
