Two men and a woman whose plans to burglarize a Weston home were previously known to investigators were filmed while breaking into the residence, authorities said.
Broward Assistant State Attorney Tony Loe on Wednesday declined to say how the alleged burglary plan was discovered, citing the open investigation.
Charged with unarmed burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and grand theft were Tiwana Sharice Jackson, 23, of Pompano Beach; Brandon Anthony Guerrero, 19, of Coral Gables; and Gabriel Soto, 19, of Miami.
A single mother was alerted that her house was targeted, and she and her two children were not at home at about noon on Tuesday. That’s when Jackson knocked at the residence in the 1400 block of Sunset Way, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
While Jackson acted as a lookout, two men entered the home through rear sliding doors, BSO said. Video released by the sheriff’s office shows two men going through bedroom drawers and carrying what appears to be a safe.
Loe brought three deputies who worked the case to first-appearance court on Wednesday. He asked Judge John “Jay” Hurley to order the arrestees held without bond, citing their criminal records.
Soto was released from state prison in December 2013 after being convicted of grand theft auto; grand theft; sudden snatching without a weapon; and burglary of a dwelling/occupied conveyance.
In 2012, Jackson was convicted of attempted obstruction of a criminal investigation, robbery without a deadly weapon and burglary of an unoccupied conveyance. She also left state prison last December, state records show.
Guerrero had a juvenile criminal history, according to court testimony.
In court Wednesday, Assistant Public Defender Terry Conover sought bonds for the trio because he told Hurley the alleged victims were “out of the home and out of danger” and none of the arrestees had significant funds.
“I don’t know how this is different from other burglaries we have on the docket, other than these gentlemen are here,” Conover said about Loe and the deputies. “[Having suspects with criminal records] is not unusual for this courtroom.”
The arrests were a joint effort by BSO’s Burglary Apprehension team, deputies in Weston and the Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (VIPER) squad, which pursues repeat offenders.
“There is an extra push [to prosecute] these home burglaries,” Loe said. “We want the word out that we’re looking for you, and we’re waiting. If you go into a home, you better hope we’re not there.”
Hurley ordered a $175,000 bond for Jackson and a $350,000 bond each for Soto and Guerrero.
