Members of Nova High School’s National Honor Society recently made more than 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and more than 150 cheese sandwiches for the Cooperative Feeding Program.
The event has been a tradition at the Davie school for the past five years. Four parent and 81 student volunteers participated this time around.
“You know you’re really in the spirit of giving when jelly falls on your Juicy Couture pants, and the first thing you think is ‘oh no, a waste of jelly!'” said senior Tori Koslow.
“I liked being able to make one of my favorite meals for a group of people who will really appreciate it,” said fellow senior Danielle Dreher.
Committee president Chanelle Dufreny and vice president Lauren Feilich spearheaded the project, contacting local grocery stores and organizing peanut butter and jelly donations.
The organization amassed more than 80 jars of peanut butter and almost 50 jars of jelly in three weeks. A local Publix provided 50 packages of bread and an additional 65 desserts for NHS to donate. Senderey Video Productions also contributed 70 loaves of bread and four packages of cheese.
“Not only was it gratifying to watch my fellow classmates work together passionately, but considering all of the hard work, … [it] has made me so proud to be the chosen leader of such a dedicated group of students,” said Emily Senderey, NHS president.
Denise Soufrine, NHS adviser, is proud of her students’ efforts.
“Some of our NHS members are so dedicated that they stayed after school for other activities, made sandwiches for those in need during their dinner break, and then returned to their other activities,” she said.
The Fort Lauderdale-based Cooperative Feeding Program works with the homeless and those at the edge of homelessness.
