Crystal was born in 1976 in Oklahoma, where she was also raised.
Her childhood was a difficult one because she was horrifically abused by her stepfather until she was twelve years old. Because of her trauma, Crystal became addicted to drugs as a teenager and also underwent an abortion.
Her first marriage ended in divorce by the time she turned twenty-one years old. She has two children from that relationship, a son and a daughter.
In 2004, she married her current husband, Virgil. Crystal went on to have another two children with Virgil, a girl and a boy who are twins.
In December 2009, Crystal had to have a routine surgery that triggered huge complications resulting in her heart ceasing to beat for nine minutes. During those nine minutes, Crystal claims to have seen heaven and met God. This changed her outlook on life and on faith completely. She has stated that hearing her mother Bonnie’s voice calling for her made her turn away from heaven.
Crystal continues to live in her home state of Oklahoma.

Crystal was a schoolteacher until the birth of her twins. Her time off made her realize the necessity to put her experience in writing, and she worked on her very first book, Waking Up in Heaven: A True Story of Brokenness, Heaven, and Life Again, which was released by Howard Books in April 2013. Crystal collaborated with bestselling author Alex Tresniowski.
Waking up in Heaven made the New York Times bestseller list and it has over nine hundred ratings on Amazon.
Crystal’s second book, Chasing Heaven: What Dying Taught Me About Living, was released in March 2016 by Howard Books. This follow-up book is a testament to Crystal’s journey since that fateful day in the hospital and on how dying made her live her life more meaningfully than ever. She collaborated with Alex Tresniowski again during the writing process.
