A driver who was attempting to park at a restaurant in Plantation on Friday evening instead crashed into the building, injuring 20 people and sending nine of them to the hospital, officials said.

Officials initially reported 12 people were taken to the hospital on Friday, but Plantation Police Department detective Robert Rettig updated that number to nine people on Saturday morning.

The driver who tried to park crashed into the Thai Meal restaurant at 8257 W. Sunrise Blvd. in the Jacaranda Plaza, said Lt. Aston Bright, spokesperson for the Plantation Fire Department. Initial 911 calls came in shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Bright said the restaurant was packed with its Friday night crowd.

Shanique Castro, 33, of Plantation, parked in front of the restaurant with her sister and two children minutes before the crash happened. The only reason they didn’t enter right after parking is because they wanted to look at the menu while still inside the car first, she said.

A red car parked next to where Castro and her family were, and Castro said the woman inside swerved onto the sidewalk.

“I guess she was trying to stop and reverse, and instead of that happening, she ended up pushing right into the restaurant,” Castro said.

In a video Castro captured moments after the car smashed into the busy restaurant, people yell for help and to call 911. Shattered glass and debris fill the inside of the restaurant and the sidewalk in front of it.

“It looked like she was trying to stop, but then she put her foot on the gas and went flying in there,” Castro said in the video. “This is ridiculously crazy.”

Castro said she saw people bleeding amid the chaotic scene as they waited for police and paramedics to arrive.

“It’s just pure screaming, that’s all you hear at that moment,” she said. “The people who were sitting down or eating didn’t expect that, they were just enjoying their meals and then boom, there’s not enough time to react to get out of the way.”

Firefighters set up a triage area and treated people at the scene while nine were taken to either HCA Florida Westside Hospital in Plantation or Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. Two were pregnant women who were transported for observation, Bright said.

The injured ranged in age and had a variety of injuries, from abrasions and lacerations to head injuries, though none were life-threatening, Bright said.

The driver who crashed into the building stayed at the scene and was not injured.

A photo showed a red car fully inside the front of the restaurant. Thai Meal is closed, and a building inspector is assessing, Bright said.

Plantation Police said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, shortly after 7 p.m. that the 8100 block of West Sunrise Boulevard in both directions were closed.

The police department has not released any details about the crash or their investigation.

Plantation Fire Department, Sunrise Fire Rescue, Davie Fire Rescue and Lauderhill Fire Rescue responded to the scene, Bright said.

Pedro Montanez, who is listed as the registered agent for the restaurant, declined to speak about the crash Saturday morning.

“We’re dealing with a lot right now, and we’re just thankful that nobody died,” he said.

The woman who took the video from outside said she would have gotten hit if she hadn’t stayed in her car.

“Now I’m afraid to go in restaurants, at this point, I’m about to do Uber Eats, I’m afraid,” she said.
