China has successfully grown high-protein mulberry trees in its eighth largest desert Ulan Buh in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The total area of the Ulan Buh desert is about 15 million mu (1 million hectares). Planting mulberry trees in the desert will not only bring benefits to the environment, but also bring more incomes for local farmers. The high-protein mulberry tree has strong roots which can resist sandstorm in desert. It also can grow fast in saline soil in hot and dry environment. The protein content of its leaves and branches is 36 percent and 28 percent respectively. Currently, more than 1,000 mu (about 67 hectares) of mulberry trees are growing in the mulberry planting base in Gudengkou County. It is estimated that the planting area of the mulberry the Ulan Buh desert will expand to more than 10,000 mu (about 667 hectares) next year.
