They’re bringing back Latin at Saint John Paul II Academy and Mandarin Chinese will be an after-school club at St. Joan of Arc Catholic School when nearly 1,000 students resume classes at the two schools in Boca Raton Aug. 14.
They expect to start the school year with a minimum of 560 students, said St. Joan of Arc Principal Caroline Roberts.
“We have ongoing open enrollment, and students who have moved to the area or want to switch schools can come in, in October or January,” she said.
“We were established in 1960, and we’re the largest Catholic school in the Palm Beach Diocese,” said Roberts, adding they have students from pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. “We accept students as young as 2-and-a-half who are potty trained; they take pre-K twice.”
Saint John, 4001 N. Military Trail, expects 400 students as the only Catholic high school that serves south county and North Broward and as such draws from Boca, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Deerfield Beach, said Brother Daniel Aubin, president.
“We’re introducing Latin I and II as a great coordinator with medicine and the sciences and we’re excited to see how it goes,” he said.
Latin will be part of the curriculum and they already have full classes for freshman and some sophomores, said Saint John Principal Edward Bernot.
They’ve also contracted with Ray Dass Test Prep to help prepare students for the PSAT and SAT tests as part of their English and math classes.
“Each of them will have an app on their iPad that allows students to go at their own pace,” he said.
St. Joan of Arc, 501 SW Third Ave., will offer geometry during school hours now for eighth-graders, Roberts said. “We’ve been doing this in steps. We offered geometry as a virtual lab class last year. This is a geometry high school class and they’re getting high school credit.
“We offer Spanish for heritage [born here] or native speakers,” she added. “It’s a win-win because a regular Spanish class becomes smaller when you’re pulling out those students who are being challenged at an accelerated level. Now the heritage program will start in third grade.”
St. Joan already introduced human rights education to all grades.
“Our faculty and staff are integrating that as part of our ethics curriculum and anti-bullying and etiquette,” she said. “Our teachers will have weekly discussions and scenarios related to each topic, along with a bible verse related to that grade.
“Tuition increased slightly, however parents seem pleased, especially now that we have this gorgeous renovated campus with the new playground, the gazebo, and our new Mercer Center with a new theater, music and fine arts rooms,” she said. The Mercer Center dedication was March 16.
