Thousands of fabrics in a rainbow of colors and patterns can be found at Ultra Fabrics, which recently opened near University Drive and Pines Boulevard in Pembroke Pines.
Brenda Rubin and her brother, Daniel Blumin, in March started the business at 7979 Pines Blvd., inside a freestanding building that has housed several furniture stores throughout the years.
“We’re not a craft store,” Rubin said. “We’re a true fabric store.”
Ultra Fabrics carries thousands of skeins in stock, Blumin said, with prices varying from $1.50 to $250 a yard.
The store’s inventory is spread out on two levels. The upstairs is dedicated mostly to drapery and upholstery, along with accessories such as tassels, fringes and pillows.
The lower level has fabrics for every project imaginable, from embroidered organdy for baby bedding, to silks, cottons and hand-beaded French lace.
The materials come in a variety of patterns, including tropical fish, geometric and Hawaiian designs. Solid colors abound, too, from bold hues to pretty pastels.
A glass case displays lace and headpieces for brides-to-be and their wedding parties.
The store also carries appliques, zippers, trims, patterns and other sewing items.
“I want to make this a one-stop place to shop,” Rubin said. “Everything we carry is new and up-to-date. People see it in a magazine and they expect to find it here.”
For those who aren’t handy with a needle and thread, Ultra Fabrics has a referral book of local seamstresses and upholsterers, Rubin said.
If the store doesn’t have enough of a specific fabric in stock, employees can check a Miami branch of the store or warehouses through a computerized system. The material can be ordered and delivered the next day, she said.
Rubin and her brother are the third generation in their family to run a fabric store. The business originally was started in Cuba, under a different name, by their grandfather, Jacob Blumin.
Their parents, Moisey and Maria Blumin, opened the first Ultra Fabrics in downtown Miami in 1964. In the 1980s, Ultra Fabrics stores opened in Hialeah and near Miami International Airport, Rubin said.
The new Pembroke Pines store is one of two now operating. The other remaining store is at 8508 SW 40th St. in Miami, where it relocated from its site near the airport in September, Rubin said.
