SUNRISE — City commissioners have approved site plans for two city parks scheduled for renovation, and have given the go-ahead to expand a third park.
Under the terms of the commission’s plan, City Park, on the south side of Sunset Strip between Northwest 64th Court and Northwest 68th Avenue, and Oscar Wind Park, on the east side of North New River Circle south of State Road 84, will both be upgraded.
At Welleby Park, on Northwest 44th Street west of Hiatus Road, an additional eight acres will be developed to expand the park.
The improvements are all part of the city’s Community Enrichment Plan.
About $700,000 will be spent at City Park; $550,000 at Oscar Wind Park and about $500,000 at Welleby Park, officials said.
At City Park, in the aging eastern section of the city, softball fields will be completely rebuilt, the basketball court will be reconstructed with lights and all the old buildings in the park will be torn down and replaced by a park shelter with restrooms, said Don Campbell, director of leisure services.
At Oscar Wind Park, workers will build a park shelter building as well as youth baseball and soccer fields.
Parking will also be expanded by 59 spaces, Campbell said.
Work at Oscar Wind Park will expand the existing park by 7.2 acres.
Expansion at Welleby Park will include construction of a shelter, an open play area, additional parking and a garden space with walkways.
A mid-February groundbreaking is planned for all three projects, which are being put out to bid, Campbell said.
“It’s exciting to see all the planning we have been doing finally coming out of the ground,” Campbell said.
