Early Life

Patricia Southall, or Pat Smith as she’s called due to her marriage with Emmitt Smith, was born on 17 December 1970 in Chesapeake, Virginia. She is 53 years old at the moment.

Her parents are Henry Mills Southall and Mildred Brinkley Southall. Her father was a retired Visiting Teacher from the Portsmouth City Schools.

She attended Western Branch High School and obtained a college degree in Journalism from James Madison University (JMU).

She was a prominent member of JMU’s African-American community at university. She held several leadership positions, like the presidency of the Student Government Association and membership in a campus leadership group.

Additionally, she participated in the Miss Madison contest and was part of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

Patricia lost her mother to breast cancer in 1992 in her senior year in College. After her mother passed away, Pat and her sister Pam cared for their father, Henry Southall. She also lost her father on December 23, 2018.

Career

Patricia Southall began her career working for Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder at his Media Office after graduating in 1992.

She won the Miss Virginia USA beauty pageant in 1993 – becoming the first African American to win the crown. Her emergence as a winner of Miss Virginia USA led her to represent Virginia at the Miss USA Pageant in 1998, where she was the first runner-up to Lu Parker of South Carolina.

Most of her notable career feats began after marrying Emmit Smith.

After marrying the NFL running back in 2000, they established “Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities” in January of that year. Nine years later, she established Treasure You.

The charity’s main goal is to create opportunities for disadvantaged youth. The “Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities” was honored at the Trumpet Awards 2012.

Patricia is a member of the Vogue 100 and was voted one of Dallas’s 10 Most Beautiful Women in 2011. She is a model for the Dallas Elevators mentor program for Dallas ISO high school students.
