A group of mothers from Coral Springs and surrounding communities has come together to make life easier for parents who now struggle to juggle their schedule and their children’s transportation needs.
Mom’s Taxi Service Inc., which began operating in Broward County in April, promises to provide safe, reliable transportation all over the county for children and other family members of enrolled members. Apart from transporting children to and from school, day care, after-school programs, athletic events and other activities, the business also provides for sick-child pickup in the case of nonlife-threatening emergencies.
“I used to work in Miami,” Sharron Gay, founder and CEO of the company, said. “I used to worry about how I could be back on time to bring my kids take my kids from school and to take them after-school activities. I used to call my friends and neighbors for help. When I couldn’t take it anymore, I stopped working. That was in January this year.”
Soon after she quit working, Gay started thinking about the business venture. “I had thought about it when I was working. After I quit, I contacted some other companies around the nation that do this. They helped me set this up. This is a very necessary service for today’s working parents.”
The feedback that she received from parents in the community made it easier for Gay to make up her mind about starting the child transportation shuttle business.
“They were very receptive. It is a situation that parents face every day when their kids need to be in different places at the same time,” she said. “Single parents may feel the need for our service more, but it is for all parents. We provide pickup and drop-off for children 4 through 17 years of age on a daily, weekly, monthly or per-call basis.”
Former Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook said it’s not just for moms, but dads, too.
“We started using the service about three weeks ago. My wife works full-time, and so do I,” he said. “It was hard to get our girl to school on a regular basis. We like the arrangement. They are reliable, friendly, and we trust the owner. The contract that we signed is detailed and thorough. She has done her homework.”
Gay said the service currently is in Coral Springs, Parkland, Coconut Creek and Margate.
“We will gradually be all over the county,” she said. “Charter schools and some private schools do not provide transportation to their students. There is a need everywhere. We have 15 passenger vans, driven by moms who undergo background checks. We work from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Our pricing is based on a weekly rate.”
Coral Springs resident Janet Gold is one of the co-owners of the business.
“My mother used to take my son to soccer practice when we were in New Jersey,” she said. “My parents were there for me, but not everyone has that support. With an increase in single parents and with so many children in after care, we definitely have a great chance of being a successful business. We have sibling discounts, which I think is a great feature.”
Eileen Dell-Hak, single mother of three and a Coral Springs resident, is glad the community has such a service.
“I am a portfolio manager, and by the time I am off work, it is always too late,” she said. “Thank God for them; it makes my life so much easier. It is a very well-run company – professional yet loving. Single mothers, working mothers, mothers of multiple children, they all need it. It helps them balance the juggle.”
Kristina Watson, a teacher from Tamarac, is another one of the business’ co-owners.
“Parents these days are so busy,” she said “We give them peace of mind. There are so many single parents these days who want to do the right thing but can’t. We live in a community of working parents, and we want to help. We want people to count on us.”
