MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins could potentially have wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and linebacker Jerome Baker return for their regular-season finale against the Buffalo Bills.
Waddle missed last Sunday’s 56-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens due to a high ankle sprain suffered Dec. 24 in a win against the Dallas Cowboys.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Waddle participated in a walkthrough Wednesday before he spoke to the media ahead of the day’s practice. The coach added Waddle was bound for work with trainers later Wednesday to see if he could handle it without any setbacks on the ankle.
If that goes well, Miami may give Waddle practice reps later in the week to see if he can play in the pivotal game against the Bills that will determine the winner of the AFC East and the owner of the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs.
Wednesday, Waddle was seen stretching with the team to open the day’s practice, but he wasn’t in his jersey and did not participate in any drills, officially listed as a non-participant on the team’s injury report.
Meanwhile, Baker was officially designated to return Wednesday, marking a return to practice for the linebacker that missed the past four games on injured reserve due to an MCL injury in his left knee suffered Dec. 3 against the Washington Commanders
“We have to get him out there and see how he responds to that,” McDaniel said about the possibility of activating Baker off IR before Sunday’s game.
At Wednesday drills, Baker was seen working 1-on-1 with linebackers coach Anthony Campanile while special teams was on the other field. When the linebackers got together toward the end of media viewing, Baker took part in light work.
Baker’s designation, the eighth and final one available to Miami off either injured reserve or the non-football injury list, effectively ends the seasons of offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn (quadriceps), wide receiver Erik Ezukanma (neck) and running back Salvon Ahmed (foot).
Without Baker, the Dolphins have had Duke Riley playing his inside linebacker role. Riley had a few difficulties in coverage against Baltimore, including giving up a touchdown on the opening defensive series to running back Justice Hill.
As Waddle tries to return, fellow standout wide receiver Tyreek Hill has also had to play through an ankle injury of his own in recent weeks, and it may be limiting his effectiveness.
“I’ve seen a warrior,” McDaniel said of Hill playing through the ailment.
Hill, seen early in the day’s drills, had personal adversity strike during practice, leaving to attend to a fire at his Southwest Ranches house.
Aside from Waddle and cornerback Xavien Howard (foot), who McDaniel said Monday is not expected to play against the Bills, the Dolphins also had left tackle Terron Armstead (knee/ankle/back), running back Raheem Mostert (ankle/knee) and defensive tackle Zach Sieler (illness) miss practice.
Miami right guard Robert Hunt, seeing an uptick in practice activity, appears to be making progress after missing seven of his past eight starts due to a nagging hamstring injury. He was limited Wednesday on the injury report.
Running back De’Von Achane was not seen during a media viewing portion of practice, but he participated later to have a limited session as he now is nursing an injury to his ribs, along with the ailing toe.
Others that were limited Wednesday: Right tackle Austin Jackson (oblique), linebackers David Long Jr. (knee) and Riley (ankle), safety Jevon Holland (knees) and offensive linemen Liam Eichenberg (calf/ankle) and Lester Cotton (hip).
The Bills are relatively healthy to start the week, with safeties Micah Hyde (neck) and Damar Hamlin (shoulder) limited in a walkthrough, edge defenders Leonard Floyd and Von Miller missing practice but because of veteran rest, although Floyd is also nursing a rib injury, and quarterback Josh Allen was a full participant despite neck and finger injuries.
Ogbah bouncing back
In the Ravens loss, the Dolphins also lost edge rusher Bradley Chubb for the season to a torn ACL in his right knee.
Defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah could play a bigger role in the defense now in place of Chubb.
McDaniel said there were a lot of nuances to Ogbah being a healthy scratch against Baltimore. He said the team didn’t want to press it in his first game back from a hamstring injury.
“We’ve depended on him, and he’s come through in a bunch of ways all season. He’s tough-minded,” McDaniel said.
Ogbah said Wednesday it was “tough” being a healthy inactive but that he understands he has an opportunity in front of him as the team needs to replace Chubb.
Pro Bowl votes
With the NFL announcing Pro Bowl rosters Wednesday night, several Dolphins finished as leaders among AFC players at their position among fan voting, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
They were: Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Mostert, fullback Alec Ingold, Hill, Armstead, defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, Chubb, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, free safety Jevon Holland, return specialist Braxton Berrios, long snapper Blake Ferguson and Riley.
Tagovailoa lost his overall votes lead from the league’s last update, finishing third to a pair of San Francisco 49ers, quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey.
