The driver of a tanker truck carrying cooking oil was severely injured after crashing on Interstate 595 in Davie on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The crash happened on westbound I-595 at Nob Hill Road, Davie Fire Rescue said in a Facebook post shortly after 3 p.m. The westbound lanes of I-595 between Pine Island and Nob Hill roads were closed for hours, including the evening rush hour.

Davie Fire Rescue Marshal Robert Taylor said the truck was the only vehicle involved, and the driver was the only occupant. The truck overturned in the crash, which caught fire and spilled the oil onto the interstate.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Indiana Miranda said in an email shortly after 4:30 p.m. that the driver lost control after a “tire failure.” The truck was carrying cooking oil.

The driver, a man in his 30s, was able to make it out of the truck before firefighters arrived, Taylor said. Miranda said he was significantly burned and taken to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

The fire department said in its Facebook post the area will be closed “for an extended period of time.”

Taylor said Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue and Hollywood Fire Rescue hazmat teams are assisting Davie Fire Rescue. FHP is investigating.
