Elna Hlavaty died on Wednesday without knowing her grandson’s fate.

The eccentric and gruff Indialantic woman, 80, whose beating at the hands of Edward Humphrey in August 1990 helped make him a suspect in five Gainesville killings, died of a heart attack.

“Grandmother is another victim of those crimes,” said her grandson George Humphrey.

A grand jury in Gainesville is expected to decide on Friday whether to indict Edward Humphrey in the Gainesville slayings. Danny Rolling, a Louisiana drifter, has been named as the prime suspect in the case.

Rolling is expected to be charged because he has been linked to the crime scenes through genetic evidence. It is unlikely that Humphrey will be charged, investigators said. “I think she knew Ed wasn’t going to be indicted,” George Humphrey said.
