My name is Philip Reed and I endorse this statement. Or, in other words, hell yeah grell are cool. What a great monster. We need more weird monsters that are fun in play.
You say your players aren't familiar with the grapple rules? Throw a few grell at them and they'll get familiar pretty quick. 
Maybe that's what we need, more monsters that teach them game. "Gather 'round adventurers as we teach you the starvation rules. This is the hecallarve and its tentacles stick in your stomach and feed on the contents of your digestive system. Have fun!"
