With the threat of inclement weather behind us (hopefully) it’s time we turn our attention to posturing for playoff spots. Here’s a Fast Five rundown of what to watch for in Week 8:

1. On the road again

Ongoing construction at Showalter Field has forced Winter Park on the road this season.

Two weeks ago the Wildcats gutted out a 7-0 win over district rival Timber Creek in a “home” game played at Colonial High School.

“We can’t worry about it. We’ve got to find a way to get on that bus every week and go find a way to get a win,” Winter Park coach Tim Shifflet said. “Adversity is going to set in for everybody, whether it’s injuries or whether it’s this or it’s that, and for us, right now, it’s not having any home games.”

The Wildcats are hopeful they’ll get the chance to celebrate homecoming on their home field in the final game of the year against Olympia, Nov. 4.

2. Honorable Hornet

A big crowd is expected Friday in College Park as Bishop Moore hosts homecoming against Tavares.

Pregame festivities include a tip-of-the-hat to the past as 1987 graduate Bob Spitulski will have his No. 81 jersey retired.

Spitulski, the only NFL alum in program history, also excelled as a wrestler and baseball player at Bishop Moore. His sons Bob Jr. and Nick play on this year’s football team.

Spitulski excelled in four seasons at UCF before being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round in 1992. A member of both the Bishop Moore and UCF halls of fame, he spent four seasons with the Seahawks from 1992-95 and another with the St. Louis Rams in 1996.

3. Changes at Edgewater

Mike Granato is in the midst of a tough transition at Edgewater after sliding into the head coaching role last week.

The defensive coordinator took over for former Florida Gators quarterback Chris Leak, who five games into his first season stepped down on Oct. 3 amid sexual assault allegations.

Granato, who was on staff last year, has already had to weather a hurricane in his first week. He will finish his second week having coached two games over a span of five days.

Edgewater (0-6) lost 34-0 to Lake Howell on Monday. The Eagles travel to Lake Minneola (0-6) Friday in a matchup of winless teams.

4. Hurricane happenings

Hurricane Matthew offered an unexpected double-dose of rest for Boone last week.

The No. 16 Braves had their Super 16 matchup vs. unbeaten Jones scrapped a week after sitting through a bye on their schedule.

Boone returns from the long layoff Thursday at No. 10 Timber Creek amid district implications. A win for the Braves puts them in position to play for a district title next week against Winter Park.

Other matchups of note scratched from the schedule due weather were No. 1 Daytona Beach Mainland at highly-touted Cocoa and Olympia (5-1) at No. 2 Apopka.

The Class 8A, District 2 matchup between Orange City University and host Oviedo has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.

5. District drama

Several games will decide playoff spots or anoint frontrunners for district titles as we near the end of the regular season.

Lake Nona is at East River in a crucial Class 7A, District 5 matchup involving teams tied at 2-0 with St. Cloud. Ocoee (4-0) hosts Lake Howell (2-1) in a tight race for the two playoff spots alongside Hagerty (3-1) in 7A-4.

In lower classifications, Foundation Academy needs a road win over Lakeland Victory Christian to repeat as 2A-4 champs. A win for Warner Christian over Deltona Trinity would give them the crown in 2A-3.
