As the world’s first transgender billionaire, Jennifer Pritzker tops the list with a massive fortune estimated to stand at US$2 billion. Pritzker’s father and uncles, Robert, Jay and Donald, were the forces behind the Marmon Group, a successful group of businesses, which included the Hyatt Hotels chain.

At 71 years old, Pritzker is known for her philanthropic activities and investments. She founded Tawani Enterprises, a private equity and wealth management venture, as well as the non-profit Pritzker Military Museum & Library in Chicago.

2. Martine Rothblatt, 67: US$585 million

Martine Rothblatt is a successful entrepreneur who made it big in the biotech industry. After completing a joint JD/MBA degree in the early 80s, Rothblatt began working in the legal field of satellite communications, even launching a number of communications companies, including the first global satellite radio network.

Rothblatt later founded United Therapeutics, a now publicly traded biotech company that works to create life-saving medical technologies. Through all her professional endeavours, Rothblatt is reported by Forbes to have made around US$585 million to date.

3 and 4. The Wachowskis, 56 and 53: US$250 million

The Wachowskis are Lana and Lilly Wachowski, transgender siblings and the film-directing duo who skyrocketed to international acclaim after the release of their groundbreaking film, The Matrix.

Often regarded as one of the most influential and impressive films of all time, The Matrix expanded from a futuristic sci-fi trilogy to a multimillion-dollar franchise that includes books, video games and animations.

Thanks to the success of The Matrix franchise, along with their other celebrated films and TV series like V for Vendetta, Jupiter Ascending, Cloud Atlas and Sense8, the Wachowskis have amassed an enormous combined fortune of some US$250 million.

5. Caitlyn Jenner, 72: US$100 million

Arguably the most famous transgender celebrity in the world, Caitlyn Jenner is an ex-Olympic gold medallist now better known as a starring member of the hit reality TV series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Thanks to the phenomenal success of the show, the former step-parent to the Kardashian clan became a household name around the world, ultimately drawing attention to her transgender journey.

Jenner is currently said to boast a bank balance of about US$100 million, which was presumably made from lucrative post-Olympics sponsorship deals and, of course, the highly profitable reality TV series which ran for 20 seasons before being wrapped for good last year.

6. Laverne Cox, 49: US$4 million

Well known for her critically acclaimed role in the TV show Orange Is the New Black, Laverne Cox is a pioneering trans actress who has gone on to appear in several films and TV projects.

Cox is the recipient of a long list of accolades, including a Daytime Emmy Award, an honorary doctorate and being named as one of People Magazine’s “most beautiful” women, in 2015.

Trans punk rocker Laura Jane Grace is best known as the founder, guitarist and lead singer of Against Me!

Still performing today, Grace has enjoyed both critical and financial success as a musician, having released seven studio albums and making a US$4 million personal fortune in the process.
